VISUALIZATION

VISUALIZATION Outline
How are artists, curators, and exhibition places connected among each other?
Some are part of a large network, some not. Who else could become part of it?

The cross-linked exhibition history information in artist-info.com is used to visualize these relations with a network graph. The results are many co-existing networks and
s clusters. The visualization of these networks is providing new insight into the world of contemporary art in a way tables or lists are not able to provide it.
In the course of time new relations add to the overall picture and make the network
more significant. Changing points of view, new art work, and the vision and new
concepts of exhibition places contribute to this.

Exhibition Information
The Source for artist-info.com Visualization
Exhibition history information on artist-info.com pages of an artist, a curator, a
gallery, museum, non-profit place, collector, and other venues like biennials or
awards is a basic feature and is always a link to related information in artist-info.com.
An artist name is linked to the individual page of this artist with the venues where solo- or group-exhibitions took place, including curators of the shows.
A curator's name is linked to the artist-info page of this curator, providing a list of exhibitions, the participating artists, and co-curators.
An exhibition place name link opens an artist-info page with this venues exhibition
history showing the artists in solo- and in group exhibitions, and curators.

All our exhibition information is based on research using reliable sources. In some
cases it goes back to 1930, and includes as well the exhibition history of closed down
venues like for example Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles, or special events like biennials.

5 Different Schemes
artist-info.com offers for an artist, curator, or exhibition place (gallery, museum, non-
profit place, collector, or other venue) as the CENTRAL node the following points of view for visualizing their network
Each scheme shows how the CENTRAL node and the members of the netwok are
connected among each other.
- For artists two schemes: ARTIST-artists, and ARTIIST-exhibition places.
Example page for an Artist
- For curators one scheme: CURATOR-artists.
Example page for a Curator - For exhibition places (gallery, museum, non-profit place, or collector)
two schemes: VENUE-artists, and VENUES-venues.
Example page for a Gallery Each scheme has its own sub-URL and is displayed in an individual browser tab or window.

Propagations / Recommendations
Furthermore, the visualized results of our queries include propagations /
recommendations for possible new connections.
These nodes are not directly connected with the central node but with one of its
members. They are based on the statistic evaluation of highest number of exhibitions
together with the specific member and are shown as 'outsider' nodes with a single
line near the edge of the displayed visualization.

Network Graph
Individual browser window
artist-info.com network visualization is available as individual sub-URL to be displayed in its own browser tab or window.
To be able to explore the network graph with all its details, the user can zoom in with buttons at the bottom of the browser window. Zooming in will show the node's names.
Each node can be clicked in the network graph and in the right side pane to filter its relations in connection with the central node.

Side Panes
Each individual selection of a cluster can be searched for member's names with the search window at left.
In the right side pane more details of network members are shown.
These are all members of the selected subset, including a link to the individual artistinfo.com page, and some more details like available Exhibition Announcements or
Artwork Offers, and community page links like Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, or YouTube. Underneath are listed all members of the displayed network graph.

Layout characteristics
The network graph's layout elements like color, the distance between nodes, or
diameter of nodes is used to interpret specific attributes related to a node. These are for example the number of connections to other nodes, the number of exhibitions together with the central node to which the whole network graph is related.
As part of a propagation / recommendation scheme our database queries include as
well results which are not directly related to the central node. They are 'outsiders' in the network schemes (not available in ARTIST-artists scheme), and displayed as nodes on the outer edge of the network graph with only one line (edge) as relation.

Source for the network visualization
The shown network graph is based on information in artist-info.com database. Each
visualization is build individually and not the result of an automated process. The
specific queries are summarizing all exhibition information without filtering any
details, for example a specific scope of years, or city.

The shown network graph is not dynamically generated using the continuous growth
of available information. It has to be built anew after a certain period to include new
exhibition data.
